Inside Tutwiler Prison for Women Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women opened in December 1942 and is located in Wetumpka, AL. The facility was named in honor of the ""Angel of the Stockades"", Julia S. Tutwiler, a noted Alabama educator and crusader for inmate education, classification, and for improving prison conditions. Tutwiler serves as the receiving unit for all female inmates coming in to the state prison system. The facility has a mental health unit, a medical infirmary, and units for inmates who are pregnant or aged and/or infirmed. Additionally, Tutwiler has an auditorium, a chapel, and offers substance-abuse treatment and administrative ancillary services. Tutwiler’s clothing plant manufactures inmate clothing items for ADOC and county jails. As Tutwiler has a female death row unit, it is classified as a close custody facility. http://www.doc.state.al.us/facility?loc=5
