인천 송도에 세워진 극지연구소는 극지대원과 연구원 그리고 국민, 이렇게 세 탐험가를 위한 베이스 캠프입니다. 송도는 바다를 메운 매립지이므로 이 건물은 바다와 해풍 등에 대응하며, 결로나 수해, 염해 등의 문제 때문에 지하층을 계 획하기 어렵습니다. 이를 해결하기 위해 대지를 마운딩(Mounding)하여 그 아래 에 기전실과 주차장 등의 지원시설을 배치하고, 마운딩 위에는 연구시설을 배 치하였습니다. 또한 연구소 내에 상징 광장과 진입 광장을, 코너에 주 타워를 배치 하여 무미건조한 격자 도시에 강렬한 인상을 주고자 하였습니다. 극지연구소는 업무시설, 연구시설, 지원시설과 기숙사 등 네 가지로 구분됩니다. 상징성과 접근성이 중요한 기관운영동의 매스는 빙산의 모습을 모티브로 한 것이며, 입면은 극지의 눈보라를 형상화 하여 석재패널 4개의 조합으로 거 친 차가움을 표현하였습니다. 연구실험동은 추후 확장을 고려해 가변성과 확장성 을 중시했으며, 각 연구시설 간의 연계를 우선적으로 고려하였습니다. 극지지원동 에서는 대형 화물차량을 위한 별도의 서비스동선을 확보하였고, 기숙사는 연 구원 및 초빙연구원을 위한 시설로서 독립성과 거주 환경이 우선시 되었습니다. 그리고 대지를 관통하는 아트리움을 통해 주요 건물들을 연결하여 실내로 이동 이 가능하도록 하였습니다. Korea Polar Research Institute, which will be built in Songdo district, Incheon will be a base camp for researchers and expedition crew while offering a glimpse of Polar research for general public. Being located on a reclaimed land, the building should be able to endure corrosive sea water and strong wind. Symbolic public plazas were proposed to animate the entry sequence and a main tower on a prominent corner will give a fresh mark to the monotonous grid pattern of the nearby district. Korea Polar Research Institute consists of four major components: administrative office, research facility, support facility and dormitories. The institute’s main administrative building is reminiscent of iceberg with pattern of stone panel express frigid polar climate. For the research zone, maximum flexibility and expandability was the key consideration. Support facility has its own separate service entry for large delivery trucks. Dormitories for researchers were designed to ensure privacy and maintain good quality of communal life.
