Download yours today: https://khub.me/sql9t The quadriceps femoris muscle is a four-headed muscle of the thigh which almost completely covers the femur. It ranks among the strongest muscles in the human body. It significantly forms the lateral contours and the ventral side of the thigh. Its innervation is carried by the femoral nerve. If we look closely, we can see that the quadriceps femoris can be split into 4 muscles: the rectus femoris muscle, vastus medialis muscle, vastus lateralis muscle, and vastus intermedius muscle. The quadriceps tendon runs above the ventral side, and through the periosteum of the patella, and finally inserts at the tuberosity of the tibia. The part below the patellar apex is known as the patellar ligament. In terms of location, the quadriceps is considered to be one of the ventral thigh muscles. As for function, the quadriceps is the only extensor of the knee joint. It plays an important role in every movement involving the stretching of the knee. And in addition, it keeps the knee from buckling when standing.
