고래야, 씽씽, 잠비나이까지... 퓨전국악의 세계화에는 끝없는 신진국악인들 발굴 노력 있었다 More and more music based on gugak Korean traditional music and its instruments is gaining recognition around the world. That includes several artists appearing on NPR Music's Tiny Desk program. Kim Bo-kyoung sheds light on what happens behind the scenes to cultivate new performers. Fierce music that mixes elements of metal and noise with Korean tradition at its heart. That's how Bob Boilen, the host of NPR Music's 'Tiny Desk Concerts' described a performance by South Korean experimental rock band Jambinai. 'Tiny Desk Concerts' has been showing intimate video performances, and Korean artists have been readily introduced on the program with Korean rock band SsingSsing performing in 2017, Coreyah and BTS in 2020, and this year was Jambinai's turn. "Ours could feel more like rock music, but playing it using Korean traditional instruments such as Haegeum and Geomungo with modern techniques could be what makes our music different from others." The mixture of gugak Korean traditional music and other genres has been in the global spotlight. That's partly down to the hard work by places like Jeongdong Theater to help new artists grow. "Jeongdong Theater has been working on the incubator program since 2017, aiming to cultivate new gugak performers." It not only offered an hour-long debut stage for them, but also let other senior performers act as mentors. "Lots of young gugak players are willing to show their new gugak music patterns. We are trying to support them to show their own unique colors to the audience." Two members of Jambinai acted as mentors for the group "Hilgeum", and the members say such mentoring was helpful. "They advised us about composing pieces, of how they listen to all types of music. Inspired by the advice, we are trying to do so too." Talented artists also need a strong support system to help them reach their potential. "For artists to be self-sustaining, they need to continuously do shows and need financial support. A system is needed to back the groups just starting out." With more support, performers are hopeful that sounds based on Korean traditional music can keep getting worldwide recognition.
