Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian director and lead designer, Fumito Ueda, produced a short pre-rendered film in around 1998 to serve as a pilot for #Ico, with a single assistant. Ueda utilized Lightwave 3D on a Commodore Amiga 500. This eventually led to #Prototype development on the first-gen PlayStation. Ico (Japan Studio, Team Ico) originally began as a #PS1 title, which started development in 1997. In 2000, Fumito Ueda moved the project to the PS2 due to hardware limitations, laying the foundation for sequels such as Nico (later renamed to Shadow of the Colossus).
