Stavropol Krai is a federal subject (a krai) of Russia. It is geographically located in the North Caucasus region in Southern Russia. 2. The most ancient archaeological finds date back to the 4th millennium BC. The territory of the present Stavropol region was successively part of the state of the Scythians (the 7th - 5th centuries BC), Sarmatians (the 3rd century BC - the 3rd century AD), Huns (the 4th - 5th centuries AD). 3. Stavropol is the largest city and the capital of Stavropol Krai. 4. It is one of the most multi-ethnic federal subjects in Russia, with thirty-three ethnic groups with more than 2,000 persons each. The western area of Stavropol Krai is considered part of the Kuban region, the traditional home of the Kuban Cossacks, with most of the krai's population living in the drainage basin of the Kuban River. 5. Mikhail Gorbachev, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (11 March 1985 – 24 August 1991), President of the Soviet Union (15 March 1990 – 25 December 1991) was born on 2 March 1931 in Privolnoye. As a child, Gorbachev experienced the Soviet famine of 1932–1933. He recalled in a memoir that "In that terrible year [in 1933] nearly half the population of my native village, Privolnoye, starved to death, including two sisters and one brother of my father. 6. The name of the city is made up of two Greek words meaning “cross” and “city”. The original fort was built on two axes which crossed each other reminding a cross. Also, one of the legends says that people found a large cross made of stone during the construction of the fortress. This was reflected in the name of the city, its flag and coat of arms. 7. The Great Cherkassky Tract is a postal road built at the end of the 18th century - the beginning of the 19th century , connecting Stavropol with Moscow . Initially, the tract passed through the capital of the Don Cossacks of that time - the city of Cherkassk, hence its name “Cherkassky tract”. Later, with the foundation in 1805 of Novocherkassk , the tract passed through this city. The road was of strategic importance, it was used for the transfer of troops during the Caucasian War and the Russian-Turkish Wars . Along the tract, post stations were organized. The Great Cherkasy tract lost its strategic importance with the development of railway communication in the North Caucasus. In the documents of the late XIX century, the road is called "Postal Route from Stavropol to Rostov-on-Don ."
