Farewell, Boris Godunov bids his children. The strain of guilt, and of power, have taken their toll. Boris is dying. In his aria "Proshchay, moy syn," Boris attempts to pass some final wisdom along to his son, who will succeed him as czar of Russia. His son, Fyodor, stands to inherit a court on the verge of revolt, as Russia descends into what's now known as the Time of Troubles. Boris implores him to rule fairly, with the grace of God on his side.
