This 3D animation shows how colon cancer is removed by a surgical procedure called a sigmoid colectomy. The sigmoid colon is the S-shaped part of the large intestine located just before the rectum. This procedure is often performed to treat conditions such as diverticulitis (inflammation or infection of small pouches in the colon wall called diverticula), colon cancer, or other diseases that affect the sigmoid colon. During a sigmoid colectomy, the surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen, accesses the sigmoid colon, and removes the diseased portion.
