The Greedy Miser A miser once lost his purse while travelling. He was very upset and distressed. as his purse contained thirty gold coins. He came across a farmer working in a large open field. "I am finished!" the miser wailed to the farmer. "I have lost thirty gold coins!" The farmer didn't know how to console the grieving miser. Just then, the farmer's daughter came up to them. She had a purse in her hand. "Look, father," she said. "This purse has thirty gold coins in it. I found it lying on the road." The honest farmer immediately returned the bag to the miser, who was greedy and cunning. He said, "Did you say thirty? My purse contained forty gold coins. Where are the remaining ten?" The miser and the farmer took the matter to court.
