The major 6th is the next interval in this guitar theory study of musical intervals on the guitar fretboard. The major sixth can be found up nine frets on one string (the distance of four and a half tones). On adjacent strings we find the major 6th up four fret (except between strings 3 and 2 where we always have an exception with the two strings being tuned a major 3rd apart). With a string skip we find the major sixth back one fret, except from strings 4 and 3 where it can be found in the same fret on stings 2 and 1 respectively. As with all of the intervals we will study in these guitar lessons, you should try and test yourself to learn the shapes with this exercise. Pick a note at random on the fretboard and see if you can play all the major sixths above (and below) that note.
