The part of the temporal lobe that processes auditory information. It is a part of the auditory system, performing basic and higher functions in hearing (language). Final sound processing is then performed by the parietal and frontal lobes of the cerebral cortex. It is located bilaterally, in the superior temporal gyrus of the temporal lobe and extends into the lateral sulcus and the transverse temporal gyri (Heschl's gyri), including the planum polare and planum temporale (roughly Brodmann areas 41 and 42, and partially 22).
