How much VRAM do you need in your graphics card? Developers tell us that the more you have, the better - and this test of the 2GB and 4GB versions of the R9 380 conclusively proves this. Games Tested: 00:00 - The Witcher 3 01:10 - Assassin's Creed Unity 02:20 - Far Cry 4 03:26 - Shadow of Mordor 04:08 - Ryse: Son of Rome 04:45 - Crysis 3 06:16 - Battlefield 4 07:13 - Tomb Raider Here we test both configurations up against the GTX 960 2GB and our existing favourite for 1080p gameplay, the 3GB Radeon R9 280. The results? It's a pretty conclusive win for the R9 380, but the key comparison here is stutter - specifically in Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4 and (to a lesser extent) Ryse. Compare the red line (2GB) with the cyan line (4GB) and you'll see that the 2GB card stutters in these titles in a way that the 4GB card simply doesn't. And that's got to be down to VRAM because aside from a very slight factory OC, there's nothing different between the two 380s. The R9 380 is basically a rebadged version of the existing R9 285. Driver enhancements make the 380 faster by a whopping great 39% on Assassin's Creed Unity, about 10% on Tomb Raider and 2% on Battlefield 4. Otherwise, performance is pretty much the same.
