Scientists at the University of Stirling have discovered bees latch on to similarly-sized nectarless flowers to unpick pollen – like keys fitting into locks. Dr Mario Vallejo-Marin of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and former Stirling PhD researcher Dr Lislie Solís-Montero, who works in El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) research centre in Mexico, found the right size of bee is needed to properly buzz-pollinate a flower. The research is published in Ecology and Evolution journal (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/wol1/doi/10.1002/ece3.2897/abstract). Read the news release (link to come). Stirling carries out research which has a positive impact on communities across the globe – addressing real issues, providing solutions and helping to shape society.
