Today, we are going to talk about another fun topic in Physics. It is all about Maxwell’s Equations. The person behind Maxwell’s equation is James Clerk Maxwell. He is a Scottish scientist who was fond of geometry and mechanical models. He started with the ideas and the mathematics that other physicists had already established. But he put them together to create a new, complete understanding of electromagnetism. We mentioned the term Electromagnetism, but what is electromagnetism? Electromagnetism is the study of electromagnetic force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. It is the interaction between electric fields and magnetic fields. An electromagnetic field is a combination of two fields; an electric field, and a magnetic field. Now have you heard the 3 equations of Maxwell? Let’s talk about it one by one. Recall our discussion about Electricity and Electric fields. During our discussion, we talked about a law relating the distribution of electric charge to the resulting electric field, and that law is called Gauss's law or also known as Gauss's flux theorem. Now, Maxwell's first equation is just a form of Gauss's Law. Maxwell’s first equation states that the electric flux through a closed surface is proportional to the total charge enclosed by that surface. A closed surface, in this case, is just a surface of any shape that completely encloses a charge, like a sphere, or any other 3-dimensional shape.
