The Santa Barbara wellhead has been pumping oil and gas through the waterways of Nembe, Bayelsa State since it exploded on November 5. Weeks later, the wellhead was still spewing oil. Nobody has been able to get close enough to the wellhead to see what caused the explosion. Clean up teams have begun trying to shut the well down, and it’s unclear how much oil was spilled. The company that owns the wellhead, Nigeria-based Aiteo Eastern E&P, along with Nigeria’s petroleum minister and its president have all promised to clean up the spill.
