Alaska Is Freezing! Winter snow cripples life in Juneau and Anchorage! A wave of cold weather across Alaska has brought subzero conditions placing additional demand on Anchorage homeless shelters, as people on the streets report cold-related injuries. Across the state, a low of 52 degrees below zero was reported Tuesday morning in Chicken. Fairbanks’ forecast Tuesday called for an afternoon high of 28 below. It was warmer in Juneau, which saw temperatures near 30 degrees Tuesday, but the city was bracing for 9 to 16 inches of snow overnight from a winter storm that already dumped 19 inches of snow on the state capital. Juneau residents are finding themselves busy digging out as a major snowstorm continues to sweep across the region. The capital city set a snowfall record on Monday and received more heavy snow on Tuesday, bringing the snow total since Sunday to more than 28 inches. For January, they’ve seen an astounding 61.1 inches and are now up to 80.8 inches for the season. A winter storm warning will go through 3 a.m. Wednesday, as the region will see a transition from snow to rain, before returning to dry conditions late Wednesday. The city and surrounding areas were still seeing temperatures below freezing going into the evening, but rising temperatures are likely.
