The main differences between those wines is that Barolo is produced from Nebbiolo grapes only, called locally Spanna, which is Brunello di Montalcino is made from Sangiovese grapes only, called locally Brunello or Prugnolo Gentile. Barolo wines are aged for 38 months, which at lest 18 months in wooden barrels. Barolo Riserva are aged for a minimum 62 months. My favourite producers of Barolo are Elvio Cogno, DeMarie. and my favourite producers of Brunello are Gianni Brunelli, Tenuta di Collosorbo, Mastro Janni and Conti Constanti.
