Today, its numerous ancient temple ruins speak of Kashmir's historic tradition and a sophisticated sense of culture and art. Martand is another Sanskrit name for the Hindu Sun-God, Surya. The Martand Sun temple was constructed in the eighth century A.D. by Lalitaditya Muktapida, the third monarch of the Karkota Dynasty. Only the ruins of Martand temple now remain to tell the narrative of this outstanding example of Kashmiri architecture. One of the oldest sun temples in India, the Martand Surya Mandir is also one of the oldest temples in Kashmir. This ancient Indian temple is also the largest stone temples to have been built in Kashmir.
