Part 25~History of Sultan Noor uddin Zangi in Urdu & Hindi | Shirkoh returned with his Army to Damishq Writer. Almas MA Voice. Nasir Aslam Nur ad-Din Mahmud Zengi, commonly known as Nur ad-Din (which means 'Light of the Faith'), was a significant figure in the history of the Seljuk Empire's Syrian province during the 12th century. He was born in February 1118 and passed away on May 15, 1174¹. Early Life and Rise to Power: Nur ad-Din ( نورالدین محمود زنگی)was the second son of Imad ad-Din Zengi, the Turkmen atabeg of Aleppo and Mosul. After his father's assassination in 1146, Nur ad-Din and his older brother Saif ad-Din Ghazi I divided their father's kingdom between themselves, with Nur ad-Din ruling Aleppo. War Against the Crusaders: Nur ad-Din played a pivotal role in the Islamic resistance against the Crusaders. He began his rule by attacking the Principality of Antioch and seizing several castles in northern Syria. He also defeated attempts by the Crusaders to reoccupy the County of Edessa, which had been conquered by his father in 1144¹. Alliances and Expansion: In 1147, Nur ad-Din made a strategic alliance with Mu'in ad-Din Unur, the governor of Damascus, by signing a bilateral treaty and marrying Mu'in ad-Din's daughter, Ismat ad-Din Khatun. This alliance helped him in his military campaigns against the Crusaders and in expanding his territory. Governance and Legacy: Nur ad-Din was known for his piety and efforts to strengthen Islamic governance. He annexed surrounding small Muslim states to establish a strong Islamic government before attempting to take back Jerusalem from the Christians. His capital was initially Aleppo, but after capturing Damascus in 549 AH, he made it his capital. Protection of the Prophet's Grave: One notable event during his reign was the protection of the Prophet Muhammad's grave. In 1164, two men attempted to steal the Prophet's body, but Nur ad-Din, having been warned in a dream, foiled their plan. He ordered the construction of a ditch around the Sacred Chamber and filled it with lead to prevent any future attempts. Nur ad-Din's reign was marked by his commitment to Islam and his opposition to the Crusaders. His efforts laid the groundwork for the later successes of his successors, including Salah ad-Din (Saladin), in the struggle against the Crusader states.
