STORYLINE : A Nepalese man who climbed Mount Everest at the age of 76, becoming the oldest person to scale the world's highest peak, celebrated an official recognition of his achievement on Monday. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal was among several dignitaries at a function in Katmandu to congratulate Min Bahadur Sherchan, now 78, after he received an official certificate in recognition of his climb from Guinness World Records. Sherchan scaled the 29,035-foot (8,850-metre) peak in May 2008 at the age of 76 years and 340 days. Speaking at the ceremony Sherchan said he climbed the mountain for "world peace". A former soldier, Sherchan was little known in the climbing community and it was his first attempt at conquering the mountain. The Guinness Book of World records listed the Japanese climber Katsusuke Yanagisawa, who scaled the peak at age 71, as the oldest person to reach the mountain's summit until Sherchan made an official appeal to them earlier this year. Nepalese nationals hold most world records related to Everest, including the fastest climb, most time spent on the summit, and the youngest person to scale the mountain.
