Through the mid 18th century, Russia saw one palace coup after another. One, staged by the future Empress Elizabeth, deposed the 1-year-old Emperor Ivan VI. After his brief reign, the boy-emperor spent his life going from one prison to another, slowly losing his mind and knowing little of what he once was.
