The peoples of India and Sri Lanka share a similar cultural history, were both colonized by the British Empire, and both won their freedom at around the same time. Yet, despite the immense diversity of the Indian republic, and the fact that Sri Lanka is literally just off of the Indian coast, they've never made any real attempt to incorporate Sri Lanka as a state of India. Even under the British, Sri Lanka and India were administered separately. Which begs the question: why in spite of all their similarities did India and Sri Lanka not unite?
