Electric cars and hybrid cars are both pretty easy to understand on their own. Electric cars are powered by electricity and get plugged in to recharge. Hybrid cars use two or more power sources. But what’s a plug-in hybrid? Plug-in hybrid vehicles, or PHEVs, have been around for a decade now, but along with fuel-cell electrics they remain one of the least understood of the new alternative fuel or “green car” technologies. The modern PHEV was devised as a stepping stone between conventional hybrids and the all-electric car. It is a way for automakers to assuage consumer unease over EVs’ limited range while temporarily appeasing government regulators’ appetite for low emissions vehicles without the cost and range penalties of an ell-electric vehicle. The simplest explanation of the plug-in hybrid is that it is a hybrid vehicle with a bigger electric motor and larger, rechargeable battery. The battery can be recharged from the commercial power grid by plugging into a 120- or 240-volt charging system, just like a fully-electric vehicle. When that charge is depleted, the PHEV operates as a regular hybrid using engine power and regenerative braking to keep electrons flowing to the battery pack. That bigger motor and battery add cost extra, though. To have any value to the consumer, a PHEV has to deliver more than a conventional hybrid. That means more power, better fuel efficiency and the ability to travel in all-electric mode at highway speeds for a useful distance. PHEV Benefits The increased all-electric capability reduces fossil fuel use and results in lower emissions and improved fuel efficiency versus a conventional hybrid, which helps satisfy regulators. PHEVs earn automakers credits toward meeting zero-emissions vehicle requirements in states that have so-called ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle) programs. Lower emissions are good, but it’s the PHEV’s’ all-electric range and ability to keep running after their batteries are depleted that have made them attractive. Ideally, they combine practical EV range but eliminate the range anxiety that was common with the EVs of the 2010s. A Toyota RAV4 hybrid, with 1.6kWh of battery capacity, can travel only short distances in all-electric mode and typically uses its electric motor only to boost the gas engine’s power. But a RAV4 Prime, with an 18.1 kWh battery, can deliver up to 42 miles or all-electric travel, much of it at highway speeds. The RAV4 Hybrid is EPA rated at 40 mpg in combined city and highway driving, while the RAV4 Prime gets a lower rating of 38 mpg in hybrid mode. However, with its initial 42 miles of all-electric mode, the PHEV’s real fuel efficiency is greater than in the standard hybrid: The RAV4 Prime would use only one gallon of gas to travel 80 miles, two gallons to travel 118 miles, and five gallons for 212 miles if it started the trip with a full battery. While a plug-in hybrid typically starts out each day with a battery that was fully charged overnight, it doesn’t need to plug in each time the battery is depleted. Instead, it reverts to “normal” hybrid operating mode once that initial charge is drained. The battery recharges while on the go using the regenerative braking system and the gas engine’s generating capacity.
