The IEP funded Elephant and Conservation Monitoring Units (ECMU) recently captured this footage of Mutiara’s small herd protecting a young elephant calf. Some of the members of the team had been following this small herd at a distance to check that they were safe after they broke away from a larger group. Suddenly, three adult female elephants and a young calf came out of the dense vegetation towards the team. One of the team started up the motorbike to move away. The sound of the engine scared the elephants who turned and ran away. When they realized that the baby had not followed them, they immediately returned to protect it.
