The rotary engine and Mazdaspeed are coming back! The Mazdaspeed program is merging with Mazda Spirit Racing to develop more street racers. At the Tokyo Auto Salon last month, Mazda displayed concept MX-5 roadsters and Mazda3 hatchbacks. Some were track only racers, and some were designed for production vehicles for street and track. Mazda's Global CEO Masahiro Moro also announced that the Rotary Development Team of Engineers would be back at it starting February 1st to research more performance and emission enhancements to the rotary engine. Currently Mazda uses a small 2-rotor engine to generate charging power for the MX-30 R-EV battery (only available overseas). Also the Iconic SP concept revealed at the Japan Mobility Show had a similar rotary generator set up. Mazda displayed both current generation MX-5 Miata roadster and Mazda3 Hatchback. This means that we could have a "mazdaspeed" type production vehicle available within a year. What do you hope comes from this increased performance research?
