The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its rugged coastline and whitewashed fishing villages perched on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves. Lagos and Faro sit on the coast and provide gateways to the region, which consists of picturesque towns such as Carvoeiro, Ferragudo and Portimão. Famous natural landmarks include Benagil Cave, Ponte da Piedade and Praia da Marinha. Further inland, the Monchique Massif forms the highest elevation of the Algarve (902m).
