The fort on Gramvousa island was built on the highest part of the island at 134m between 1579 and 1584 by the Venetians to protect the island of Crete against the Ottoman Turks. The Gramvousa Fortress was eventually captured by the Turks in 1691 when Captain de la Giocca surrendered. The Fortress walls are still intact aswell as a small church and a mosque. Most of the original buildings collapsed or were destroyed during the Ottoman siege.
