Kuwait Fire Kills 49 Migrant Workers, Mostly Indians; New Delhi Responds | Vantage with Palki Sharma The tragedy in Kuwait killed 49 migrant workers, out of which 40 were Indians. The fire broke out early Wednesday morning in a six-story building located near capital Kuwait City. The building was reportedly overcrowded, housing over 200 workers from various nationalities. Most of the residents were Indian, with others from Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, and Nepal. Reports say, flammable materials used in partitions within the apartments. It is suspected - they contributed to the quick spread of the flames. Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Al-Sabah, Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, blamed the building's owner for the tragedy, accusing them of prioritizing "greed" over safety. The Indian government is working to identify the victims and repatriate the remains. The Indian government has also opened hotlines for families of the victims and announced compensation measures. This tragedy has reignited concerns about the poor living and working conditions of Indian migrant workers in the Gulf region.
