Gray is one of the colors that we consider as a neutral color, a color that is very flexible and goes with everything. In this color theory overview we'll explore the attributes of gray including how it is available in both warm and cooler versions, how it can to create variety by complimenting the natural warm or cool tones with other colors, and how it creates different looks depending on how light or dark it is. Gray is great as a background color, a neutral color for walls and flooring, but it is also wonderful to use where you want to draw attention to a feature or focal point in a room such the cabinetry or a kitchen island. As a quick design exercise, take notice of the gray colors around you and notice if they tend toward a more bluish tone or more warmish tone, or compare two colors of gray next to each other and see which gray is cooler or warmer.
