The Kritinia were ancient city of Rhodes. Its history stems from ancient times. In Greek mythology, Althaimenis, eldest son of Katreas, grandson of Minos, king of Crete, because the oracle told him that he would kill his father, he left Crete, Rhodes comes in and colonize Kritinia. But homesick place and so he made the mountain Attaviros a temple in honor of Zeus Attaviros. Famous statues of this temple is said were two golden cows. Originally, the settlement was coastal (the current position Kamiros Skala), but in the post-Byzantine period was moved more mountainous, for more security against pirates. The ancient settlement eventually sunk. Saved a few ruins, most of them in the sea. On land there are only the remains of an early Christian church Basilica. In 1658, the Francesco Morosini attempted to conquer Rhodes apovivazontas army on the beach of Kamiros Scala, but the guard, timely eidopoiimeni from Halki, repel him. The subsequent safety of the settlement based on the castle (Castello). Therefore, until the liberation of the Dodecanese, the village was named Kastellos, from the Latin Castellum, which means fortress or Castel Nuovo, which refers to 1480. The castle of Kritinia is a mixture of Byzantine and Medieval style and inside there are the remains of the Catholic Church of St. Paul and newer buildings, because the castle was used during the Venetian rule as Naval Base (Mariners). The Kritinia is 55 km. from the town of Rhodes. It is built on a hill and has panoramic sea views.
