Revelation 21 offers a magnificent vision of the new heaven and the new earth, marking the consummation of God's redemptive plan. John witnesses the first heaven and the first earth passing away, and the New Jerusalem descending from heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. In this new creation, God will dwell with His people, wiping away every tear, and eliminating death, sorrow, and pain forever (Revelation 21:1-4). The voice from the throne declares the renewal of all things and invites the thirsty to drink freely from the fountain of the water of life. Those who overcome will inherit all things, becoming children of God, while the cowardly, unbelieving, and sinful face the second death in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:5-8). An angel then shows John the New Jerusalem, radiating the glory of God. The city is described with brilliant imagery: its wall is made of jasper, its streets of pure gold, and its foundations adorned with precious stones. The twelve gates, each made of a single pearl, bear the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, while the foundations carry the names of the twelve apostles (Revelation 21:9-21). The city has no need for the sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates it, and the Lamb is its light. The nations walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. The gates will never be shut, for there is no night there. Nothing impure will ever enter the city, only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life (Revelation chapter 21:22-27). This chapter reveals the ultimate hope for believers: a future where they will dwell eternally in the glorious presence of God, free from all suffering and sin, in perfect communion with their Creator and Savior.
