As part of our Future Textiles programme, visiting school pupils are able to partake in a variety of traditional textiles skills workshops such as sewing, pattern drafting and hand-embroidery. As we appreciate that pupils don’t necessarily have access to the same tools, materials and equipment while learning at home, our Future Textiles manager Ashleigh has created a step-by-step guide showing how they can learn and practice hand-embroidery techniques using recycled household materials. In this video tutorial, Ashleigh demonstrates how plastic fruit and vegetable packaging can be recycled into something beautiful using simple techniques such as couching, 3D appliqué and French knots.
