Everyone and their grandma is bussing for OLED right now because of their infinite contrast ratios, per pixel local dimming, HDR, and lightning fast response times, but are we out of touch, is OLED truly the superior technology, or is Mini LED not only still viable, but perhaps just as good or dare I say better than OLED? Well today let's break it down into six categories to find out exactly that. Contrast, and right away this one is a clear win for OLED. Don’t get me wrong Mini LED can offer really excellent contrast, and with enough dimming zones and good IC controllers for those zones, Mini LED can get shockingly close to OLED in this area, something that's been proven when comparing OLED TVs like the LG G4 to Mini LEDs like the Bravia 9 or likely upcoming 98UX from Hisense which is said to have 10,000 local dimming zones, a massive increase over the roughly 1,000 most have now, and the more zones, the tighter control Mini LED can have over the backlight allowing for higher contrast, but even with a whopper like the 98UX assuming the zone controllers are good, that still means each zone has to control 829 pixels roughly on a 4K display, which really isn't that much and is a very small area overall, but on OLED well, you get over 8,000,000 zones, one for each pixel. So at a certain point eventually Mini LED with enough zones will get close enough to OLED that we won’t be able to see a difference in contrast, but even 10,000 isn't enough, and the 1,000 on most monitors today is nowhere near close enough meaning uh oh, you’ll have to either deal with blooming around bright objects or inverse dimming to some extent.
