MANUAL CERVICAL DECOMPRESSION • What good is having experience and information if all you do is apply it. I believe sharing not only is helpful, but effective at the same time. It was teaching day at @ChirologyGroup where another colleague and doctor of chiropractic paid a visit and asked to observe during one of my treatments. My reply, “Absolutely! Sharing is Caring!” • Patient “B” suffers from a neck and mid-back condition that is causing her to go into a kyphotic position which exacerbated by an increased hyper lordosis. As of late, her cervical spine has been in a flexed (head down) position through her workday causing and inflammation and discomfort in her suboccipital region and bilateral occiput. After all modalities, #physiotherapy, & The Almighty Adjustment I perform manual #cervicaldecompression with a towel. Now years of observation and application of this technique varies with the amount of pressure. • DISCLAIMER: unless you’ve been properly trained by a licensed professional all DO NOT perform this technique. 1️⃣ A towel is used an place under the cervical region with the patient lying supine with knees bent (varies with clinicians, I like it because it helps relax the lumbar region), arms to the side palms up. 2️⃣ Grab the towel at both ends and distract (pull) axially (towards you horizontally) with minimal strength (varies with clinicians) to cause a distraction from the suboccipital region and each cervical vertebrae. Causing a release in pressure from cervical nerve roots, elongating the cervical muscles, and resulting in having a 😁 patient. 3️⃣ I perform 3 passes with a 2:1 ratio, 20 seconds distraction and 10 seconds rest. VERY VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT...DO NOT just let go of pressure when distracting. SLOWLY release the tension from the pull so the muscles do not tighten back up and cause more pain. • After the cervical decompression I use @RockTape for neuromuscular re-education to help bring the shoulders back and to help train the muscles on what I want them to do.
