Yesterday was a pretty low-key day for me. I played pickleball in the morning and then just basically hung out at home, talked on the phone and looked at the script of the next show I'm playing at Desert Star Playhouse called, "The Greatest Snowman!" (Yes, it will have a lot of "The Greatest Showman" music in it. It will be a fun Christmas show for sure! So today I was trying to decide what music I'm going to incorporate into it. So for a change of pace last night, I decided on a whim to record this song - no rhyme or reason. It's just an easy song with a catchy melody. I haven't been a big fan of old country music, but I always liked this song, but I wouldn't categorize this as the old country style of music. "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" is a song written by Richard Leigh, and recorded by American country music singer Crystal Gayle. It was released in June 1977 as the first single from Gayle's album We Must Believe in Magic. Despite the title, Gayle herself already has blue eyes. How could you not remember her singing this song with that long and flowing beautiful brown hair. In a 2004 Country Music Television interview, Gayle stated that Leigh wrote the song because his dog had one brown eye and one blue eye. "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” captures the stages of heartbreak – from denial to bargaining, to the dawning feeling of losing something good in your life. Tell me no secrets, tell me some lies. Give me no reasons, give me alibies. Tell me you love me and don't let me cry. I didn't mean to treat you bad. Didn't know just what I had But honey now I do. The song became a worldwide hit single. In the United States, it topped the Billboard country music chart for four weeks, and was Gayle's first (and biggest) crossover pop hit, reaching number 1 on the Cashbox Top 100 for two weeks, and number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. The album received Platinum status, the first by a female country singer. The song became Gayle's signature piece throughout her career. In 1978, the song won Gayle a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. In 1999, the song was recognized by ASCAP as one of the ten most-performed songs of the 20th century. The song has a jazzy feel to it when compared to many other country songs of that era. I hope you enjoy it and please stay safe and healthy out there! From my ❤️ to yours! 🤗
