The Fifth Plebeian Secession was the last in Roman history. It capped off a long history of Plebeians using their own manpower to protest Patrician dominance at a time when Roman government was essentially a whose who of Patrician society. The Plebeians had already been fighting for centuries to receive equal political rights and each Secession had brought them closer and closer. But by the end of the 5th Secession the Plebeians had finally become a force in Roman politics, if they had enough money that is. And the Conflict of the Orders was finally ended, allowing the Republic to stabilize and begin their real conquest of the Mediterranean. But what actually happened in the 5th Secession? Why was it the last Secession? And what happened to the 4th Secession? Let's talk about it.
