From the first generation of Chinese migrants crossing the globe for Jamaica, Leslie Kong of Beverly Records has planted a deep seed in Reggae music history. From Bob Marley’s first studio session to Toots & Maytals.. and many more. I Kong, a revered elder and highly respected Reggae artiste. Along with his son, Skunga Kong, a highly acclaimed producer distinguished as “Young Legend” by pioneers, they are heirs to Leslie Kong’s Jamaica-Chinese legacy. With Heavy HK and UMMU, they stepped foot into China to share this unique heritage and thus, fulfilling a cycle of mankind’s journey. While in their Father's land, they spent a chemistry exploding week with JahWahZoo, Chengdu’s finest Reggae band. The combination was a clear and dynamic hit! Catapulting us to this point, to create a historical Reggae album! Legendary Jamaican Chinese Reggae icon... I Kong Highly acclaimed young prodigy producer... Skunga Kong Fans’ favourite Chinese Reggae band... JahWahZoo A combination like none other, set in destiny! What We Need? In Reggae, the message of 'Unity' is an overstanding. Coming from one blood, we are all Brothers and Sisters dispersed across this planet over time. As Bob Marley sings, “Movements of Jah People”. From one land to another.. I Kong and his story is a testament to this. Reggae has recently been recognised as UNESCO as a global cultural treasure! With the recent induction of Jamaica's Reggae Gold Hall of Fame, Leslie Kong of Beverly Records was recognised for this formidable contributions in Jamaica’s music. From being the first to record Bob Marley, to producing Jimmy Cliff, Toots and The Maytals to being the co-founder of Island Records. He also played a big role in the soundtrack to “The Harder They Come”, starring Jimmy Cliff. This incredible genre of music has touched every corner and in China, it is at a developing stage. We do not share the same commercial support, compared to pop music or other genres. It is magnificent to see the legacy of music and humanity go one round across the world and back. From Leslie Kong leaving China to Jamaica and having I Kong step foot for the first time in China to introduce all these heritage. As the musical heir of Beverly Records’ Leslie Kong, I Kong is a bonafide icon, whose identity of being half Jamaican and half Chinese has delivered him as a messenger. In 2019, Heavy HK took on the mammoth task of a Homecoming Tour with I Kong and his son/protege, Skunga Kong. It was their first trip to his Father’s land and connected with China popular Reggae band, JahWahZoo. Through a week long of intensive rehearsals, they turned up the heat and was straight fyah. Naturally, on his coming visit, I Kong, as a Teacher figure will spend time in China with JahWahZoo to make an album together. Passing on the knowledge through music, as prophesied in his lyrics "Pass It On", to the people of his father's homeland. This album will be produced by Skunga Kong, 3rd generation Chinese Jamaican musical pride continuing Beverly's Records' legacy. Musical Journeys like this are historical and become a part of legendary tales passed on to generations.
