It serves as the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District. Historically, Jaisalmer was the capital of the Jaisalmer State, governed by the Bhati Rajputs. The city is famous for its stunning Jaisalmer Fort, which stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, featuring a royal palace and several ornate Jain temples. The fort and the town below are known for their distinctive architecture, made of finely sculptured yellow sandstone. Jaisalmer is situated in the heart of the Thar Desert and has a population of about 78,000. It has been recognized for its hospitality, ranking 9th on Booking.com's list of the most welcoming cities in the world. The city was founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD, with its name deriving from the founder ("Jaisal") and "Mer" meaning fort, highlighting its fortified and royal heritage. However, the city faced economic challenges with the rise of Bombay as a major port and the shift in trade routes.
