In the Gospel of John, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the Advocate (or Paraclete) that the Father will send after he is gone. The word in the original Greek text is parakletos: para = "beside" kalein = "to call" The New Testament translation of parakletos into English is often "advocate," as in a lawyer who comes in defense of us. This is because John 14:15-31 focuses so much on Jesus' new commandment to love as he loved. Other ways of translating the word could be "counselor," "helper," or "comforter." The point is that we can turn to the Holy Spirit to call him to our side to be with us to teach us and help us love Jesus. So, as we try to live out Jesus' new commandment to love one another as he loved us, we can turn to the Holy Spirit for help. We can turn to the Holy Spirit to comfort us. We can turn to the Holy Spirit to inspire us to teach us how to live as disciples in the world today. We are never alone in our journey of faith.
