Elephants live in the wild parts of Africa, South Asia and South East Asia 3. There are 2 types of elephants found in the world. African elephants and Asian elephants. 4. African elephants are the largest mammal that lives on land. 5. Elephants can grow over 13 feet tall and weigh up to 15000 pounds An elephant’s brain weighs about 4.5-5.5 kg And its heart 12-21 kg 6. Elephants are herbivores that means they only eat plants. They spend 16 hours per day eating An adult elephant consumes 300-600 pounds of food per day. 7. Each elephant creates about 1 ton of poo per week. Which keeps the soil fertile and disperses tree seeds. 8. Along with their large food consumptions elephants drink 30-50 Galloons of water per day. 9. Can you take a guess why elephants can’t jump? It is because of their gigantic size. Elephants don’t have leg muscles strong enough and leg bones springy enough to elevate them in the air. 10. While elephants can’t jump, they are excellent swimmers. They use their trunk as a snorkel to breathe in the air while swimming . 11. Trunk can also be useful to collect food and clean themselves Another peculiar feature of an elephant is its tusks. Tusks are used to dig food and water, to clear trees or to defend themselves. 12. They use mud as sunscreen as sun safety is just as important for elephants as it is for us. 13. It’s hard to imagine an animal as large as an elephant being afraid of anything, but it’s true – elephants are afraid of bees. 14. Mummy elephant keeps baby elephant in the tummy for 22 months- almost 2 years!! 15. Elephants can communicate to each other over far distances And many of them live together in social herds and families. 16. Elephants can live up to 70 years in the wild.
